Photos were taken in August and October, 2002 when members of JATAN visited Riau Province in the middle of Sumatra for its investigation on the impacts of pulp and paper industry and illegal logging.
There are two big pulp and paper mills in Riau, clearing of natural forests for acacia plantations and many conflicts with local people are occurring. Also, because Riau is next to Malay Peninsula over Malacca Straight, illegal logging and illegal wood trade is frequently seen.
